Winchester Hospital Recognizes ‘Extraordinary Nurse’ Amy Pellerin

Winchester Hospital has recognized Amy Pellerin, RN of Haverhill, as its most recent recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses after a patient’s granddaughter nominated her for being so “attentive, gentle and concerned” to her grandmother. The DAISY Award, presented in collaboration with the American Organization of Nurse Executives, is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the exceptional efforts that nurses make each day.

In the nomination, the woman wrote that she was touched by how much time Amy spent with her family and her grandmother – listening to stories, comforting them, laughing with them – as if her grandmother was the only patient on Amy’s caseload.

“I have found it very difficult to put into words a clear picture of just how amazing Amy is and just how much she affected our family during one of the most difficult times in our lives,” the woman wrote. “In fact, when I’m struggling with the loss even now I think of Amy and remember that she made my grandmother’s last hours as painless and peaceful as she could.”

Winchester Hospital has joined hundreds of medical facilities across the country in honoring extraordinary nurses with a DAISY Award each month. Based in Glen Ellen, Calif., the nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) in 1999. The DAISY Award, which stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System,” was established by Barnes’ wife and parents as a gesture of thanks to nurses nationwide for the profound difference they make in the lives of patients and their families.

In recognition of her selection, Amy received a DAISY Award pin, a hand-carved sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch” and a certificate that reads, “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”
