Winchester Hospital Named Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence
Winchester Hospital has received recertification as an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®.
This three-year ASMBS BSCOE accreditation for Winchester Hospital acknowledges its commitment to providing quality improvement and patient safety for bariatric surgery patients. As an accredited program, Winchester Hospital was able to demonstrate that the center meets the needs of bariatric surgery patients by providing multidisciplinary, high-quality, patient-centered care.
Obesity is no longer considered a cosmetic issue that is caused by overeating and a lack of self-control, according to the ASMBS. The World Health Organization, along with National and International medical and scientific societies, now recognizes obesity as a chronic progressive disease resulting from multiple environmental and genetic factors.
The disease of obesity is extremely costly not only in terms of economics, but also in terms of individual and societal health, longevity, and psychological well-being. Due to its progressive nature, obesity requires life-long treatment and control.
According to the ASMBS, individuals affected by severe obesity are often affected by many other obesity-related conditions and diseases, such as type-2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and more. Combined with obesity these diseases may often lead to premature death.
In recognition of these issues, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery awards BSCOE designations to hospitals who achieve optimal performance levels, despite the fact many obese patients present sharply increased surgical risks.
