Winchester Hospital Nurse Honored as Best in Her Field
For more than 30 years Linda McGowan has been a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN).
McGowan, the nurse manager of Winchester Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, would attend the AACN award ceremony every year and watch as the top critical care nurses in the country were honored as Circle of Excellence Award winners.
“When the winners stood on stage I always thought about how extraordinary these people must be to win this award,” McGowan said.
This spring, McGowan was honored on that stage as one of 25 nurses in the country to receive the Circle of Excellence Award.
“It’s such an honor,” she said. “The association and its members set high standards for the care they provide to patients and that’s the way I’ve tried to be as a manager. To be honored for this on a national stage is so unbelievable.”
When she first received the email announcing her as a winner, she had to read it a few times.
“I didn’t even know my staff nominated me,” McGowan said. “I just kept reading the email. I was overwhelmed.”
The Circle of Excellence award recognizes individuals who exemplify excellence and innovation in the care of acutely and critical ill patients and their families. It’s an award that McGowan credits her staff and Winchester Hospital’s leadership in achieving.
“I truly do not think I could be the manager I am without the support of my staff and without the support of the leadership at the hospital,” McGowan said. “I’ve been able to accomplish a lot of great things at Winchester Hospital, and I couldn’t have been as successful without their help.”
