Winchester Hospital Recognizes ‘Extraordinary Nurse’ Diane Scali
Winchester Hospital has recognized Diane Scali, RN of Salem, NH, as its most recent recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Scali was nominated by a patient because she had “such a calming effect.” The DAISY Award, presented in collaboration with the American Organization of Nurse Executives, is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the exceptional efforts that nurses make each day.
In the nomination, the patient wrote that she was extremely nervous about her surgery, but Scali comforted her and promised to be there when she woke up. After surgery, Scali never left the patient’s side and gave support to the patient’s nervous son.
“Diane is the ideal in nursing that many never achieve,” the patient wrote. “I am so grateful she was my nurse.”
Winchester Hospital has joined hundreds of medical facilities across the country in honoring extraordinary nurses with a DAISY Award each month. Based in Glen Ellen, Calif., the nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) in 1999. The DAISY Award, which stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System,” was established by Barnes’ wife and parents as a gesture of thanks to nurses nationwide for the profound difference they make in the lives of patients and their families.
In recognition of her selection, Scali received a DAISY Award pin, a hand-carved sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch” and a certificate that reads, “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”
