Winchester Hospital Recognizes ‘Extraordinary Nurse’ Starr Cloonan
Winchester Hospital has recognized Starr Cloonan, RN of Wilmington, as its most recent recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Cloonan was nominated by her colleagues for being “an outstanding role model” after she comforted a father and son as their pregnant wife and mother was being operated on. The DAISY Award, presented in collaboration with the American Organization of Nurse Executives, is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the exceptional efforts that nurses make each day.
In the nomination, Cloonan’s colleague wrote that she helped arrange food and drinks for the family, updated them during the procedure, stayed well past her shift and watched the son while the doctors talked to the father. She even made it a point to check in on the family the following day.
“Whether it is advocating for her patients, putting a smile on a child’s face, taking care of a parent or comforting a family, Starr has been a treasure for her staff and patients,” her colleague wrote. “I can only strive to be as caring and compassionate as she is.”
Winchester Hospital has joined hundreds of medical facilities across the country in honoring extraordinary nurses with a DAISY Award each month. Based in Glen Ellen, Calif., the nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) in 1999. The DAISY Award, which stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System,” was established by Barnes’ wife and parents as a gesture of thanks to nurses nationwide for the profound difference they make in the lives of patients and their families.
In recognition of her selection, Cloonan received a DAISY Award pin, a hand-carved sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch” and a certificate that reads, “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”
