Childbirth and Baby Care Classes at The Center for Healthy Living

Preparing for the arrival of a new baby is an exciting time and Winchester Hospital helps you enjoy every minute of it. We offer new parents a variety of programs and courses that will help make this special time easier and help you feel more prepared. We’ve been supporting new parents throughout the Boston and Eastern Massachusetts area for more than 25 years!

The Center for Healthy Living at Winchester Hospital offers childbirth and baby care classes on a regular basis, as well as sibling classes for new big brothers and sisters and CPR classes. The center is also home to a lactation boutique that carries quality breastfeeding products and supplies, offers support for new moms and provides lactation consultations by a certified lactation consultant. Below is a list of upcoming childbirth and baby care classes offered by Winchester Hospital’s Center for Healthy Living. To register for classes, please call (781) 756-4700 or visit www.winchesterhospital.org/events.

First Aid and Safety for New Parents This class begins with a video-based safety tour of your home that will help you to prevent injury by identifying common danger areas. Then we discuss common safety devices (i.e. locks and gates) and where to locate these items. Problem areas in your yard and protecting children at play are also reviewed.

The second part of the course is dedicated to common injuries and appropriate first aid, along with a discussion of more serious injuries and treatments. Instructors will demonstrate and, where appropriate, let the class members participate in first-aid techniques. This class meets on one night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Please note: CPR is NOT taught in this class.

Cost: $40 per person or $70 per couple (must call, 781-756-4700, for couples rate)

Sibling Class prepares children for the arrival of their new sibling. Children will see the nursery and mom's room. They will make a welcome home banner for the new baby. Discussion focuses on safety and how siblings can help care for the baby. Parents are encouraged to participate.

Time: 10 to 11 a.m.

Cost: $25

Nursing Mothers Support Group is a free support group for new moms who have questions about breastfeeding. The group meets every Wednesday and is run by a certified lactation consultant.

Time: 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

All-Day Childbirth Classes are intensive classes designed to meet the needs of expectant parents in just one day. Focus on labor process, including relaxation and breathing techniques. Classes meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on select Saturdays at Winchester Hospital.

Time: 9 a.m.

Location: 41 Highland Ave, Winchester

Cost: $190

Breastfeeding Class provides education and support for women who plan to breastfeed. Focus is on promoting a successful breastfeeding experience through education, practical information and problem-solving. If you are undecided about breastfeeding your infant, this class will help you make an informed decision. Tips of breast pumps, storing breast milk and weaning will be discussed. Information will be provided regarding ongoing breastfeeding support through the outpatient Lactation Center. Coaches are encouraged to attend. This class is offered once a month.

Cost: $50

Mommy and Me Yoga is a gentle yoga class that provides an opportunity for mothers to regain strength and flexibility, bond with their baby, and connect with other moms. Baby can be held by mom for some of the movements or lay on a blanket close to mom during the class. Mothers are welcome to take a break to feed their child at anytime during the class.

Time: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Cost: $60 (4 weeks)

Prenatal Yoga (gentle to moderate level) is a class that prepares your body for childbirth with movement in gentle to moderate postures (asanas) that stretch, strengthen and tone muscles, and breathing techniques for focus. 

Date: Tuesdays, Feb. 4 to Feb. 25

Time: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Location: Unicorn Park Drive, 1st Floor Conference Room, Woburn

Cost: $75 (5 weeks)

Family and Friends CPR teaches rescue skills in CPR and chokesaving for adults, infants and children. Class meets one night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. This class is suitable for new parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. This is not a certification class.

Time: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Cost: $45

Care of the Newborn Teaches parenting skills necessary to comfortably care for your new baby. Topics include infants' characteristics, behavior, needs, safety, diapering, bathing and feeding. This class is offered once a month.

Date: Monday, Feb. 10

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: 41 Highland Ave., Winchester

Cost: $60

Five-Week Prepared Childbirth Series assists expectant parents in preparing for labor and birth, including third trimester changes, labor support, stages of labor and comfort measures. Relaxation and breathing techniques are practiced weekly.  Classes are held Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and classes are held either in Winchester 
or Wilmington.

Date: Wednesdays, March 12 to April 9 

Time: 7 to 9 p.m.

Location: 41 Highland Ave, Winchester or Family Medical Center at 500 Salem St. in Wilmington

Cost: $160

Online Childbirth Class is for expecting parents where traditional childbirth classes do not fit their hectic and demanding lifestyles. This class allows expecting parents to learn at their own pace from the comfort of their home.
