Relax and Rejuvenate with Fitness Classes at Winchester Hospital

Are you looking to reduce stress this fall season? Winchester Hospital’s Community Health Institute is offering Reiki Therapy – a healing technique that can reduce stress, relax your body and promote healing. During this form of energy healing, hands are placed just off the body or lightly touching the body. Reiki is gentle, non-invasive, non-manipulative and non-intrusive. Not interested in Reiki? Don’t worry, there are plenty of other fitness programs and classes for people of all ages to help keep you fit. A complete list of activities and classes offered is listed below. Ageless Yoga is a 10-week yoga class that is ideal for loosening up the muscles and joints that tighten with age and cause discomfort, reduced mobility, stiffness and pain. This class will incorporate modified yoga poses, breathing techniques and relaxation methods.

Date: Mondays, Sep. 10 to Nov. 26 (no class Oct. 8 and Nov. 12, you can join any time for a prorated fee)

Time: 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Location: 12 Alfred St., Woburn: Baldwin Park I, Keating Conference Room

Cost: $150 (10 classes)

Flex and Stretch is a 10-week class taught by a physical therapist that focuses on maintaining and/or improving flexibility, strength and balance.

Date: Mondays and Fridays, Oct. 19 to Nov. 19 (you can join any time for a prorated fee)

Time: 10 to 11 a.m.

Location: 12 Alfred St., Woburn: Baldwin Park I, Keating Conference Room

Cost: $60 (10 Classes)

Beginner Tai Chi/Qi Gong is a four-week, beginner class that will focus on gentle flowing movements which reduce stress, increase flexibility and balance, and improve muscle strength.

Date: Mondays, Oct. 22 to Nov. 26 (you can join any time for a prorated fee)

Time: 5 to 6 p.m.

Location: Winchester Hospital Family Medical Center, 500 Salem St., Route 62, Wilmington

Cost: $90 (six classes)

Fitness Basics is a five-week, low-impact aerobic and muscle conditioning workout for women and men. This fitness program helps maintain muscle strength and cardiovascular health.

Date: Every Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 23 to Nov. 27 (no class Nov. 22, you can join any time for a prorated fee)

Time: 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays

          9:15 to 10:15 a.m. on Thursdays

Location: Winchester Hospital Family Medical Center, 500 Salem St., Route 62, Wilmington

Cost: $55 (10 classes)

Smoking Cessation is a six-week class that works with smokers to help identify habits and provides tailored treatment plans. The goal is to have all participants smoke-free by week four.

Date: Wednesday, Oct 24 to Nov. 28 (you can join any time for a prorated fee)

Nursing Mothers Support Group is a free support group for new moms who have questions about breastfeeding.

Date: Every Wednesday, Oct. 24, Oct. 31, Nov. 6 (you can join any time for a prorated fee)

Pre-Natal Yoga is a five-week yoga class that prepares your body for childbirth in gentle to moderate postures that stretch, and strengthen and tone muscles. The class also focuses on breathing techniques and meditation.

Date: Tuesdays, Oct. 30 to Nov. 27

Time: 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $75 (five classes)

CPR for Family and Friends is a one-night non-certification class designed to teach CPR and choke-saving skills.

Time: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Tai Chi/Qi Gong is a 10-week fitness class that utilizes gentle flowing movements to reduce stress, increase flexibility and balance, and improve muscle strength.

Date: Mondays, Nov. 5 to Jan. 21 (no class Dec. 24 and Dec. 31).

Time: 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.

Cost: $150 (10 classes)

Heartsaver CPR + AED is a one-night course that focuses on rescue and choke-saving skills for adults, children and infants. This course also provides instruction on automated external defibrillation. After successful completion of a skills evaluation, participants will receive certification in these life-saving techniques.

Time: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Cost: $65

Insulin Pumpers is a free support group for diabetics who wear an insulin pump or are interested in learning about insulin pump therapy. The group meets the second Saturday of the month.

Mommy & Me Yoga is a gentle yoga class designed to help mothers regain strength and flexibility after pregnancy while bonding with their baby and connecting with other moms.

Date: Wednesdays, Nov. 14 to Dec. 5

Time: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

HOPE Group is a free support group for parents and families who have experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death. The group meets the second Wednesday of the month.

Alzheimer’s Support group is designed to provide emotional, educational and social support for caregivers through regularly scheduled meetings. The group meets the third Thursday of the month.

Yoga Basics is a 10-week yoga class for beginners or for those who want to return to a yoga practice. This class provides introductory postures and breathing techniques, gentle stretching and strengthening and relaxation.

Reiki 1st Degree is a one-day course that teaches Reiki Therapy, which is a healing technique that reduces stress, relaxes your body and promotes healing.

Location: Crandall Conference Room, 41 Highland Ave., Winchester

Cost: $150

Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers Online, Part 1 teaches single-rescuer and team basic life through case-based scenarios and interactive activities and videos. Part 1 must be paired with a hands-on skills practice and testing session (Parts 2 and 3).

Cost: $90 – Initial certification; $65 – recertification

Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (initial certification) is a one-night class during which participants will learn CPR and choke-saving techniques for adults, children and infants. This course is a pre-requisite for the basic life support instructor course. After successful completion of a written test and skills evaluation, participants will receive certification in these life-saving techniques.

Building Bones is a five-week, low-impact class that focuses on muscle strengthening and stretching with the use of low weight bearing exercises. The workout is designed for men and women who want to tone muscles and maintain bone health.

Time: 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Cost: $45 (10 classes)

Yoga is a traditional yoga 10-week class that includes gentle stretching, postures/poses, conditioning exercises, breathing, techniques and relaxation/meditation. This class is ideal for the beginner or the experienced student.

Time: 6 to 7:15 p.m.
