Fall into Your Healthy Routine with The Center for Healthy Living

This fall, join The Center for Healthy Living at Winchester Hospital for a variety of fitness and yoga classes that will strengthen your mind and your body.  Yoga classes will help calm and focus your mind, while the fitness classes will leave you feeling fit. Fitness Basics is a low-impact aerobic and muscle conditioning workout class for women and men.This fitness program helps maintain muscle strength and cardiovascular health. 

Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 3 to Oct. 3

Time: Tuesdays - 9 to 10 a.m.; Thursdays - 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.

Location: Winchester Hospital Family Medical Center,500 Salem St., Wilmington

Cost: $55

Family and Friends CPR teaches rescue skills in CPR and choke saving for adults, infants and children.Class meets one night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. This class is suitable for new parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. This is not a certification class.

Date: October 4th

Prenatal Yoga (gentle to moderate level) is a class that prepares your body for childbirth with movement in gentle to moderate postures (asanas) that stretch, strengthen and tone muscles, and breathing techniques for focus.

Time: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $75 (5 weeks)

Yoga Basics is a yoga class that is gentle for those who want to return to yoga practices.  Enjoy the harmonizing benefits of yoga with introductory postures and breathing techniques, gentle stretching and relaxation. This class provides clear instructions and modifications. 

Date: Saturdays, Sept. 7 to Nov. 16 (no class Oct. 12)

Time: 9 to 10:15 a.m.

Cost: $150 (10 weeks)

Tai Chi/Qi Gongis a class that focuses on gentle flowing movements which reduce stress,increase flexibility and balance, and improve muscle strength.

Cost: $150 (10 weeks)

Qigong for Health and Stress Management teaches basic qigong breathing, movement and meditation techniques that will enhance the body/mind connection, foster better joint and muscle wellness, and help to alleviate harmful stress. The techniques taught will help to stimulate the flow of body/ life force energy (Qi), increase and enhance its quality, and create greater personal awareness of it.

Cost: $90 (6 weeks)

Ageless Yoga is a class that helps you stretch and strengthen muscles and joints that begin to tighten with age. This yoga class, beneficial to people at any age, but especially seniors, can help regain flexibility while reducing aches. In this class you will learn modified poses for safe practice, breathing techniques and relaxation methods. 

Date: Mondays, Sept. 9 to Nov. 25 (no classes Oct. 14 andNov. 11)

Time: 11:15 to 12:30 p.m.

HOPE Group is a free support group for parents and families who have experienced a miscarriage,stillbirth or neonatal death. The group meets the second Wednesday of the month.

Nursing Mothers Support Group is a free support group for new moms who have questions about breastfeeding. The group meets every Wednesday.

Flex and Stretch is taught by a physical therapist and will help condition you for every day life activities. The class focuses on maintaining and/or improving your flexibility,strength and balance. It is also designed to help alleviate muscle tightness,arthritis pain and stiff joints, and improve balance.

Time: 10 to 11 a.m.

Insulin Pumpers is a free support group for diabetics who wear an insulin pump or are interested in learning about insulin pump therapy. The group meets the second Saturday of the month.

Yoga for Lower Back Pain is a treatment option for adults to help alleviate some common problems of chronic low back pain. Participants will be guided through a yoga practice with the elements of asana (postures/exercises), breath coordinated with movement and a guided resting period/deep relaxation.

Date: Saturday, Sept. 14 to Nov. 9 (no classes Oct. 12)

Time: 10:30 to 11:45 a.m.

Cost: $140 per session (8 classes)

Alzheimer’s Support group is designed to provide emotional, educational and social support for caregivers through regularly scheduled meetings. The group meets the third Thursday of the month.

Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Initial Certification teaches rescue skills in CPR and choke-saving for adults, infants and children. This class meets for one night from 6 to 10 p.m. This is a CPR certification course, and participants must pass a written exam and successfully complete a skills evaluation in CPR and chokesaving and AED rescue skills. This class is suitable for daycare providers, fitness instructors, police, firefighters, security guards,lifeguards and anyone expected to perform CPR in the workplace.

Date: September 18th

Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Recertification renews your rescue skills in CPR and choke-saving for adults, infants and children. This class meets for one night from 6- 10 p.m. This is a CPR certification course, and participants must pass a written exam and successfully complete a skills evaluation in CPR and chokesaving and AED rescue skills. You must bring your current/expiring card to class.

Date: Monday September 9th or October 7th

First Aid and Safety for New Parents This class begins with a video-based safety tour of your home that will help you to prevent injury by identifying common danger areas.Then we discuss common safety devices (i.e. locks and gates) and where to locate these items. Problem areas in your yard and protecting children at play are also reviewed.

The second part of the course is dedicated to common injuries and appropriate first aid, along with a discussion of more serious injuries and treatments. Instructors will demonstrate and, where appropriate,let the class members participate in first-aid techniques. This class meets on one night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Please note: CPR is NOT taught in this class.

Mommy and Me Yoga is a gentle yoga class that provides an opportunity for mothers to regain strength and flexibility, bond with their baby, and connect with other moms.Baby can be held by mom for some of the movements or lay on a blanket close to mom during the class. Mothers are welcome to take a break to feed their child at anytime during the class.

Time: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Yoga is a traditional yoga class that includes gentle stretching, postures/poses (Asana),conditioning exercises, breathing techniques (Pranayama) and relaxation/mediation.This class is ideal for the beginner or the experienced student. Class is taught with various modifications to address all physical abilities. This class includes a longer meditation/relaxation period where various techniques are taught to manage stress and induce a relaxed state.

Cost: $150 (10 classes)

Heartsaver CPR+AED is a one-night course that focuses on rescue and choke-saving skills for adults, children, and infants. This course also provides instruction on automated external defibrillation. After successful completion of a skills evaluation, participants will receive certification in these life-saving techniques.

Date: Friday, Sept. 13 or Sept. 27, or Oct. 11

Time: 6:30 to 10 p.m.
