Accomplish Your New Year’s Resolution at The Center for Healthy Living

Get in shape for the New Year at The Center for Healthy Living at Winchester Hospital. Choose from a variety of fitness and yoga classes that will strengthen your mind and your body.  Yoga classes will help calm and focus your mind, while the fitness classes will leave you feeling fit. Custom Fitness for Healthy Living is a new fitness program taught by certified personal trainer Jo Calnan. She will work with a small group (maximum of five people) so you can receive individual attention specific to your health and fitness needs. Workouts will focus on strength training, cardio, stretching and flexibility. This class meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. 

Date: Saturday, Jan. 11 to Feb. 24 (no classes Jan. 20, Feb. 17 and Feb. 19)

Time: 5 p.m.

Cost: $115 per session

Fitness Basics is a low-impact aerobic and muscle conditioning workout class for women and men. This fitness program helps maintain muscle strength and cardiovascular health. 

Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 7 to Feb. 6

Time: Tuesdays, 9 to 10 a.m.; Thursdays - 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.

Location: Winchester Hospital Family Medical Center, 500 Salem St., Wilmington

Cost: $55 (10 classes)

Prenatal Yoga (gentle to moderate level) is a class that prepares your body for childbirth with movement in gentle to moderate postures (asanas) that stretch, strengthen and tone muscles, and breathing techniques for focus. 

Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays

Time: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Location: Unicorn Park Drive, 1st Floor Conference Room, Woburn

Cost: $75 (5 weeks)

Nursing Mothers Support Group is a free support group for new moms who have questions about breastfeeding. The group meets every Wednesday.

Date: Wednesday, Jan. 8, Jan. 15, Jan. 22, Jan. 29

Time: 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

All-Day Childbirth Classes are intensive classes designed to meet the needs of expectant parents in just one day. Focus on labor process, including relaxation and breathing techniques. Classes meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on select Saturdays at Winchester Hospital.

Cost: $190

Insulin Pumpers is a free support group for diabetics who wear an insulin pump or are interested in learning about insulin pump therapy. The group meets the second Saturday of the month.

Care of the Newborn Teaches parenting skills necessary to comfortably care for your new baby. Topics include infants' characteristics, behavior, needs, safety, diapering, bathing and feeding. This class is offered once a month.

Date: Monday, Jan. 13

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: 41 Highland Ave., Winchester

Cost: $60

Yoga is a traditional yoga class that includes gentle stretching, postures/poses (Asana), conditioning exercises, breathing techniques (Pranayama) and relaxation/mediation. This class is ideal for the beginner or the experienced student. Class is taught with various modifications to address all physical abilities. This class includes a longer meditation/relaxation period where various techniques are taught to manage stress and induce a relaxed state.

Time: 6 to 7:15 p.m.

Cost: $150 (10 classes)

Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Initial Certification teaches rescue skills in CPR and choke-saving for adults, infants and children. This class meets for one night from 6 to 10 p.m. This is a CPR certification course, and participants must pass a written exam and successfully complete a skills evaluation in CPR and chokesaving and AED rescue skills. This class is suitable for daycare providers, fitness instructors, police, firefighters, security guards, lifeguards and anyone expected to perform CPR in the workplace.

Alzheimer’s Support group is designed to provide emotional, educational and social support for caregivers through regularly scheduled meetings. The group meets the third Thursday of the month.

First Aid and Safety for New Parents This class begins with a video-based safety tour of your home that will help you to prevent injury by identifying common danger areas. Then we discuss common safety devices (i.e. locks and gates) and where to locate these items. Problem areas in your yard and protecting children at play are also reviewed.

The second part of the course is dedicated to common injuries and appropriate first aid, along with a discussion of more serious injuries and treatments. Instructors will demonstrate and, where appropriate, let the class members participate in first-aid techniques. This class meets on one night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Please note: CPR is NOT taught in this class.

Building Bones is a low-impact class that focuses on muscle strengthening and stretching with the use of low-weight bearing exercises. The workout is designed for women and men who want to tone muscles and maintain bone health. 

Date: Wednesdays and Fridays, Jan. 17 to Feb. 19

Time: 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Cost: $45 per session (10 classes)

Sibling Class prepares children for the arrival of their new sibling. Children will see the nursery and mom's room. They will make a welcome home banner for the new baby. Discussion focuses on safety and how siblings can help care for the baby. Parents are encouraged to participate.

Five-Week Prepared Childbirth Series assists expectant parents in preparing for labor and birth, including third trimester changes, labor support, stages of labor and comfort measures. Relaxation and breathing techniques are practiced weekly.  Classes are held Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and classes are held either in Winchester 
or Wilmington.

Mommy and Me Yoga is a gentle yoga class that provides an opportunity for mothers to regain strength and flexibility, bond with their baby, and connect with other moms. Baby can be held by mom for some of the movements or lay on a blanket close to mom during the class. Mothers are welcome to take a break to feed their child at anytime during the class.

Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Recertification renews your rescue skills in CPR and choke-saving for adults, infants and children. This class meets for one night from 6- 10 p.m. This is a CPR certification course, and participants must pass a written exam and successfully complete a skills evaluation in CPR and chokesaving and AED rescue skills. You must bring your current/expiring card to class.

Time: 6 to 10 p.m.

Cost: $65

Family and Friends CPR teaches rescue skills in CPR and chokesaving for adults, infants and children. Class meets one night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. This class is suitable for new parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. This is not a certification class.

HOPE Group is a free support group for parents and families who have experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death. The group meets the second Wednesday of the month.

Heartsaver CPR+AED is a one-night course that focuses on rescue and choke-saving skills for adults, children, and infants. This course also provides instruction on automated external defibrillation. After successful completion of a skills evaluation, participants will receive certification in these life-saving techniques.

Yoga Basics is a yoga class that is gentle for those who want to return to yoga practices.  Enjoy the harmonizing benefits of yoga with introductory postures and breathing techniques, gentle stretching and relaxation. This class provides clear instructions and modifications. 

Date: Saturdays, Feb. 22 to May 3 (no class Feb. 15 and April 19)

Time: 9 to 10:15 a.m.
