Winchester Hospital Offers Online Childbirth Class for Expectant Parents
Winchester, Mass. – For many expecting parents, traditional childbirth classes do not fit their busy and demanding lifestyles. For soon-to-be mothers on bed rest, venturing out to attend these classes would be against doctor’s orders.
In order to accommodate the needs and schedules of all of our expecting parents, Winchester Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the area to offer an online childbirth education class.
“The online childbirth class is a thorough and convenient complement to all of our maternity health services,” said Susan Powers, associate director of Winchester Hospital’s Community Health Institute. “It provides the flexibility many parents need, while offering quality education materials designed by a former labor and delivery nurse with support from a board-certified obstetrician.”
The Winchester Hospital Community Health Institute began offering the eLearning Childbirth Education class so that expectant couples could learn about pregnancy and birthing at their own pace and convenience.
This online class is a 109-page interactive, web-based program that includes illustrations and videos, which can be viewed on either a PC or Mac. In addition to the childbirth tutorial, the program features an additional 20 pages that highlight the prenatal, birthing and feeding services offered by Winchester Hospital. Also included in the $190 program is a tour of Winchester Hospital’s Maternity Services Department and a 90-minute question and answer session with a childbirth instructor.
Studies have shown that when expecting parents are educated about the birthing process it can reduce stress during labor. When parents understand the stages of pregnancy and childbirth it can help calm their worries and provide peace of mind.
“Our caring and attentive nurses are fantastic at coaching women through childbirth in the delivery room, but the education must begin much earlier in the pregnancy,” said Suzanne Murphy, director of maternal child health nursing at Winchester Hospital. “This eLearning program is the perfect way to educate without excluding parents who, for many reasons, cannot commit to a traditional class.”
