Winchester Hospital’s Cancer Program Earns Accreditation with Commendation from American College of Surgeons
Winchester, Mass. – Winchester Hospital’s Cancer Program has earned a three-year Accreditation with Commendation from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.

“This accreditation validates the quality work conducted each day by our dedicated staff,” said Arlan F. Fuller Jr., MD, clinical vice president for the integration of oncology services and academic affiliations at Winchester Hospital.

The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer awards Accreditation with Commendation only to facilities that voluntarily undergo an extensive evaluation process and performance review. In order to maintain approval, facilities with approved programs must have an on-site review every three years.

“This accreditation demonstrates that Winchester Hospital’s Cancer Program meets the stringent standards set by the Commission on Cancer, in addition to providing top notch medical care to patients,” said Chitra King, MD, chief of the Hematology-Oncology Department at Winchester Hospital.

“The Commission on Cancer has set the bar high and this accreditation recognizes our ongoing commitment to excellence,” added Patrick Brophy, MD, chairman of Winchester Hospital’s Cancer Committee.

Winchester Hospital received its Accreditation with Commendation for excelling in patient care standards including adherence to patient management and treatment guidelines; providing onsite prevention or early detection cancer programs; participation in cancer-related educational activities; and implementing initiatives that directly improve patient care.

According to the American College of Surgeons, there are about 1,400 cancer programs approved by the Commission on Cancer in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. According to the Commission on Cancer, these cancer programs – representing 25 percent of all hospitals – diagnose and/or treat 80 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.

Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer-approved cancer program ensures access to:
  • Quality care close to home
  • Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
  • A multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
  • Access to cancer-related information, education and support
  • A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1922, the Commission on Canceris a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.
