Kevin F. Smith Named a Top CFO of the Year
Winchester, Mass. – Kevin F. Smith, chief financial officer and executive vice president at Winchester Hospital, has been named a top CFO of the Year in the nonprofit category by Boston Business Journal. All honorees of the CFO of the Year Awards were recognized recently at a lunch ceremony at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel.
As announced two years ago in a succession plan, Smith will become president and chief executive officer of Winchester Hospital on Oct. 1, 2009. Dale Lodge, who recently celebrated his 10th year as the hospital’s president and chief executive officer, will continue as president and chief executive officer of Winchester Healthcare Management, the parent organization of Winchester Hospital and other subsidiaries.
“Kevin has earned my deepest respect in the eight years he has been a member of the Winchester Hospital team,” Lodge said. “His in-depth knowledge of the health care industry has enabled Winchester Hospital to achieve the highest levels of performance.”
Boston Business Journal’s first annual CFO of the Year Awards includes six categories: publicly traded companies; large private companies (over $50 million in revenue); midsized private companies ($20 million to $50 million in revenue); small private companies (under $20 million in revenue); nonprofits; and lifetime achievement. Honorees were selected based on their leadership and accomplishments in guiding their businesses’ financial operations, as well as community involvement.
Under Smith’s leadership, Winchester Hospital’s operating surplus has consistently performed above the 75th percentile when compared to other Massachusetts hospitals. In addition, patients, employees and physicians consistently place Winchester Hospital above the 90th percentile nationally for overall satisfaction.
In 2007 and 2009, Winchester Hospital was honored by Premier, a national health care alliance, with its national quality award for superior patient outcomes in both quality and efficiency of care. The Premier award is given to the top 1 percent of acute care hospitals nationally.
Data Advantage, a national health care information and rating organization, ranked Winchester Hospital No. 2 in the nation in the Hospital Value Index’s category of the 100 Best Value Hospitals. The ranking is based on quality, affordability and efficiency of service, public opinion and patient satisfaction.
Smith is a member of the Massachusetts Hospital Association’s Standing Committee on Finance; a member of Reading Cooperative Bank’s Board of Directors; board member and former chairman of Jobs for Youth; and a preceptor for students enrolled in Ohio State University’s Graduate Program in Health Administration. He lives in Reading and Orleans, Mass.
The CFO of the Year Awards is Winchester Hospital’s second recent recognition by Boston Business Journal. Last month, the publication selected Winchester Hospital as the No. 1 Best Place to Work in Massachusetts for excellence in employee satisfaction, working conditions and company culture. Winchester Hospital is the first large company to win the coveted No. 1 spot two years in a row, and is one of only four companies to be recognized all seven years of the program’s existence.
