Winchester Hospital’s Community Health Institute September Classes
Winchester, Mass. – As summer winds down, consider signing up for one of Winchester Hospital’s Community Health Institute classes or programs. There are fitness classes to help keep you in shape and disease management programs to assist you in staying healthy. Find all of the programs available in the month of September listed below.
 
Prostate Cancer Support Group is a free support group for men with prostate cancer and their families. This group meets the first Wednesday of the month.
Date: Wednesday, Sept. 2
Time: 7 to 9 p.m.
Location: 12 Alfred St., Woburn: Baldwin Park I, Keating Conference Room
 
Nursing Mother’s Group is a free support group for new moms who have questions about breastfeeding and motherhood.
Date: Meets every Wednesday (Sept. 2, Sept. 9, Sept. 16, Sept. 23, Sept. 30)
Time: 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

CPR for Family and Friends is a one-night non-certification class designed to teach CPR and choke-saving skills.
Date: Friday, Sept. 4
Time: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Location: 12 Alfred St., Woburn: Baldwin Park I, Keating Conference Room
Cost: $45
 
Yoga is a 10-week moderate to strong-level yoga class that includes postures with longer holds, Pranayama (breathing) techniques, yoga philosophy, chanting and meditation.
Date: Tuesdays, Sept. 8 to Nov. 10
Time: 6 to 7:15 p.m.
Location: 12 Alfred St., Woburn: Baldwin Park I, Keating Conference Room
Cost: $150 (10 classes)
 
Prenatal Yoga is a 10-week class that prepares the body for childbirth with gentle to moderate yoga postures that stretch, strengthen and tone muscles. The class also focuses on breathing techniques and meditation.
Date: Tuesdays, Sept. 8 to Nov. 10
Time: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Cost: $150 (10 classes)
 
Yoga for Health is a 10-weekgentle yoga class ideal for individuals who are returning to good health after an illness or surgery. The class will incorporate stretching, gentle exercises, strengthening using yoga postures, meditation and relaxation practices, and breathing techniques.
Date: Tuesdays, Sept. 8 to Nov. 10
Time: 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.

HMR Weight Management Program is holding a free information session about its highly structured weight-loss program. The session will provide details on the program’s food plan, weekly education classes and medical supervision.

HOPE Group is a free support group for parents and families who have experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death. The group meets the second Wednesday of the month.

Fitness for Fun is a fitness class for children ages 8 years and older. The six-week class will feature warm ups, stretching, endurance, agility, balance, flexibility, speed and cool down workouts.
Dates: Thursdays, Sept. 10 to Oct. 15
Time: 8 – 11 year-olds from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m.

Cost: $50 per child (six classes)
 
Day to Day with Diabetes for Adults is a free support group for those who are living with diabetes, their family and friends. The group meets the second Thursday of the month.

Fitness After Fifty is a five-week, low-impact, muscle conditioning workout for men and women 50 years of age and older.
Date: Thursday, Sept. 10 to Tuesday, Oct. 13 (class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays)
Time: 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays
          9:15 to 10:15 a.m. on Thursdays

Cost: $55 (10 classes)
 
Yoga Basics is a 10-week beginner level yoga class that focuses on introductory postures and breathing techniques, gentle stretching and strengthening, and relaxation.
Dates: Saturdays, Sept. 12 to Nov. 14
Time: 9 to 10:15 a.m.

Cost: $150 (10 classes)
 
Insulin Pumpers is a free support group for diabetics who wear an insulin pump or are interested in learning about insulin pump therapy. The group meets the second Saturday of the month.

Mommy & Me Yoga is a five-week gentle yoga class designed to help mothers regain strength and flexibility after pregnancy while bonding with their baby and connecting with other moms. There will be two classes that begin in September – one held on Mondays and another on Fridays.

Ageless Yoga is a 10-weekyoga class is ideal for loosening up the muscles and joints that tighten with age and cause discomfort, reduced mobility, stiffness and pain. This class will incorporate modified yoga poses, breathing techniques and relaxation methods.

Time: 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Tai Chi/Qi gong is a 10-week fitness class that utilizes gentle flowing movements to reduce stress, increase flexibility and balance, and improve muscle strength. There will be two classes that begin in September – one held on Mondays and another on Thursdays. Participants can attend one or the other, or both.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (Skills test recertification) is a one-night class designed for healthcare providers seeking recertification in CPR and choke-saving techniques. This program requires successful completion of the online test portion of the certification, and only evaluates the skills section of the program.
Date: Monday, Sept. 14 also offered on Monday, Sept. 28
Time: 6 to 8 p.m.

Cost: $45
 
Building Bones is a five-week class that focuses on building muscles through strengthening and stretching. The workout is designed for men and women concerned with osteoporosis, but is suitable for anyone who wants to tone muscle using weights.
Date: Wednesday, Sept. 16 to Friday, Oct. 16 (class meets on Wednesdays and Fridays)
Time: 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (initial certification) is a one-night class during which participants will learn CPR and choke-saving techniques for adults, children and infants. This course is a pre-requisite for the basic life support instructor course. After successful completion of a written test and skills evaluation, participants will receive certification in these life-saving techniques.

Time: 6 to 10 p.m.

Heartsaver CPR + AED is a one-night course that focuses on rescue and choke-saving skills for adults, children and infants. This course also provides instruction on automated external defibrillation. After successful completion of a skills evaluation, participants will receive certification in these life-saving techniques.
Date: Thursday, Sept. 17 also offered on Monday, Sept. 28
Time: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Infant and Child First Aid is a one-night course that focuses on choke-saving techniques and basic first aid skills. Participants will learn how to care children or infants with fractures, burns, seizures, fever and vomiting.

CPR for Family and Friends is a one-night non-certification class designed to teach CPR and choke-saving skills.

First Aid and Safety for New Parents is a one-night class designed to help new parents identify common danger areas in the home, prevent injuries and care for injuries if they do occur.
Date: Friday, Sept. 25
Time: 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Cost: $40 per person, $70 per couple
 
Flex and Stretch is a five-week class taught by a physical therapist that focuses on maintaining and/or improving flexibility, strength and balance.
Date: Friday, Sept. 25 to Friday, Oct. 30 (class meets every Monday and Friday, no class Monday, Oct. 12)
Time: 10 to 11 a.m.
Location: 12 Alfred St., Woburn: Baldwin Park I, Keating Conference Room
Cost: $60 (10 classes)
Nursing Assistant Training is a 75-hour state-approved course that, upon successful completion, participants receive a nurses’ aide training certificate. This certificate is a prerequisite to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). There are multiple dates and times available for this program.
