Free 'Spring Into Action' Event on April 24 for Children and Parents
BURLINGTON, Mass. – April 13, 2009 – The Burlington Mall will “Spring Into Action” by hosting an afternoon of fun for children and their parents sponsored by Winchester Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston on Friday, April 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. Information about springtime asthma triggers and asthma management also will be provided at the event, which will take place at the Winchester Hospital & Children’s Hospital Boston Play Area located on the mall’s upper level near the food court.

The event will be staffed by nurses from Winchester Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston. Parents will have the opportunity to learn about CHAMP, Winchester Hospital’s free pediatric asthma program designed to reduce hospital visits and missed days from school. Activities will include crafts, face painting, prizes, music and games.

“Everyday asthma management is important in preventing the dangerous exacerbation of asthma symptoms, especially since they may be subtle enough to cause serious breathing difficulties in a short amount of time,” said Sue Powers, RN, MS, associate director of Winchester Hospital’s Community Health Institute.

Through a long-standing partnership, Winchester Hospital’s pediatric patients receive care onsite from Children’s Hospital Boston physicians. From pediatric emergency room doctors to neonatologists, Winchester Hospital’s youngest patients and their parents are ensured access to some of the same specialists and expert care offered in Boston.

Amy Burack, RN, MA, AE-C, community asthma programs manager at Children’s Hospital Boston, added, “While taking medication and attending to environmental concerns are key, reinforced knowledge about the condition and its management is also an essential tool for reducing the frequency and severity of asthma attacks and living a healthy and active life.”

“We’re excited to host this fun, educational event at our new children’s play area through our partnership with Winchester Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston,” said Linnea Gerrior-Kelliher, director of mall marketing at Burlington Mall. “Spring Into Action is a great way to educate children and families while having some fun along the way.”
