Marlene Williamson, Director of Inpatient Nursing Services at Winchester Hospital, Receives Creative Health Care Management’s Mentoring Award
Winchester, Mass. – Marlene Williamson, director of inpatient nursing services, is one of two nurses in the nation to receive Creative Health Care Management’s Mentoring Award. The honor is presented to a professional nurse who goes beyond teaching to share expertise in a nurturing, noncompetitive way that develops autonomy and self-actualization.
“We’re proud that Marlene has been recognized for the positive impact she has on others in their professional nursing development,” said Kathy Schuler, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Winchester Hospital. “She touches lives while setting the standard for excellent nursing practice at Winchester Hospital.”
Three fellow nurses wrote letters to support Williamson’s nomination, all recognizing her ability to inspire and motivate colleagues.
Karen MacKenzie, nurse manager of medical oncology at Winchester Hospital, said Williamson is an “exceptional leader” who uses her vision, passion and persistence to connect with people and bring out the best in them.
“People who work for Marlene want to do well for her, as well as for themselves,” MacKenzie wrote. “She has high expectations for her staff, but she provides you with the tools and encouragement you need to meet those expectations.”
Winchester Hospital nurse Sheryl Smith recalls how Williamson “ignited a spark” in colleagues to raise funds to purchase a mobile library to educate nurses in remote African villages. Through Williamson’s encouragement and leadership, Smith became co-chair of the hospital’s Magnet Nurses Charitable Fund.
Donna Sherrill, director of Magnet and special projects at Winchester Hospital, described how Williamson coached her in delivering presentations and other job functions so she would gain confidence to move into her new role.
“My ability to succeed is directly correlated with the guidance I have received and continue to receive from Marlene. There is no question that for me and others, she is a mentor with a capital M,” Sherrill wrote. “The beauty of this relationship is that Marlene has passed on to me not only knowledge and confidence, but she has also taught me how to be a mentor myself. Now it is my job and my joy to share with others the gift she has given me.”
