Winchester Hospital Physician Recognized with ‘Patriot Award’ Mohammed Jaleel, MD, Honored for Support During Fellow Doctor’s Deployment
Winchester, Mass. – A Winchester Hospital physician recently was honored for his support of a fellow doctor during his deployment to Iraq.

Mohammed Jaleel, MD, president of the New England Inpatient Specialists at Winchester Hospital, received the Patriot Award from fellow physician and Massachusetts Army National Guard Maj. Jose Baez, DO.

While deployed to a medical clinic in Iraq from October 2008 to January 2009, Baez said he received supplies and personal gifts from many members of the hospital staff. It was this outpouring of support, paired with his co-workers’ willingness to cover his hospital shifts, that prompted Baez to nominate Jaleel and the entire team for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award.

“When isolated in a remote area in harms way this level of support means a lot,” Baez said. “At the hospital we work like a small family and when anything happens to one of us we all try to chip in and provide help and support.”

ESGR is a Department of Defense organization that recognizes civilian employers who support National Guard and Reserve employees. The national organization, which was established in 1972, also advocates for increased awareness of employment law for military members and helps mediate conflict between military members and civilian employers. The Patriot Award is presented to organizations that provide unparalleled support and assistance to their employees who serve in National Guard and Reserve units.

Baez was first deployed overseas in April 2005. This recent second deployment came at a more difficult time, Baez said, since he left just as winter - and the flu season - began. Despite the inconvenient timing, Jaleel and the entire staff stepped up and filled the soldier’s hospital shifts.

To recognize his support, Jaleel, who is a resident of Lexington, received a Department of Defense Certificate of Appreciation and a patriot lapel pin. While grateful for the honor, Jaleel said the entire team is lucky to have a colleague like Baez.

“He has gained such valuable experience from the military,” Jaleel said. “It has provided him with incredible discipline and sense of teamwork. He is the first one to step up and help others, and when he needs help, the others do not hesitate. The leadership and people at Winchester Hospital foster a culture of commitment, camaraderie and care.”
