Winchester Hospital and Shields Health Care Group Provide Resource for Families Touched by Cancer
Winchester, Mass. – Almost every family in every community has, in some way, been touched by cancer. Accents and customs may differ, but the universal thread that we share is the need for support and understanding.
For this reason, Winchester Hospital and Shields Health Care Group are jointly providing their cancer patients with copies of a new book, “You Are Not Alone: Families Touched by Cancer,” by Eva Grayzel. A former stage 4 oral cancer patient, Grayzel wrote the book to offer suggestions for helping children understand the complicated dynamics that often accompany a cancer diagnosis and treatment. It portrays children from different countries around the world sharing what they do to soothe sadness, ease tension and find strength when a family member has cancer.
“Most patients going through radiation treatment come to our centers five days a week for six weeks. During that time, our staff often becomes a second family,” said Arlan F. Fuller Jr., MD, clinical vice president for the integration of oncology services and academic affiliations at Winchester Hospital. “Our priority is promoting well being and support for the families we serve with the highest levels of innovation and compassion.”
“This initiative has special meaning for us and our partners. We are a family business, and we recognize the need for comforting and healing entire families through their cancer journey,” said Jack Shields, president of Shields Health Care Group. “Attempts to protect children from cancer information can actually be more alarming and confusing to them. We hope this book provides families with strategies to better communicate so everyone can be involved and supported.”
The book is available to cancer patients at the Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center or through their Winchester Hospital-affiliated oncologists. To learn more about Winchester Hospital’s cancer care services, please visit www.winchesterhospital.org/cancercare or www.whroc.com.
