Bruce A. Bornstein, MD Now Providing Innovative Treatments for Breast and Gynecological Cancers at Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center

Winchester, Mass- Patients of the Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center will now benefit from new services, with the addition of Bruce A. Bornstein, MD to its team of radiation oncologists.

Dr. Bornstein treats all cancers and provides special expertise in the use of electronic brachytherapy. The Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center is one of the few centers in Massachusetts to offer this innovative treatment option. With this procedure, used for early stage breast cancer, patients can complete treatment in five days versus the traditional six weeks of radiation therapy. There is such specific criterion for eligibility that Dr. Bornstein and his colleagues evaluate each patient’s case individually before determining whether it is a clinically appropriate option. Electronic brachytherapy is also used as a “boost” for gynecological cancers to significantly reduce recurrence of these cancers.

“I am pleased to join the team of oncology providers at Winchester Hospital. It is exciting to share in delivering the latest advances in cancer therapy and work with such a highly regarded team of physicians,” Dr. Bornstein said. “Winchester Hospital has a stellar reputation in the greater metro and Boston areas for its advanced cancer care, and we are dedicated to adding new technology as it emerges to improve outcomes. But more than that, we strive to make the lives of our patients and their families easier by providing care in a convenient setting, with compassionate staff. Many Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center patients have a renewed sense of well being and hope, and that inspires me on a daily basis.”

A Massachusetts native, Dr. Bornstein has extensive expertise and experience in the field of radiation oncology and special interests in oncology and women’s health. Previously, Dr. Bornstein was on faculty at the Harvard Joint Center for Radiation Therapy which included treating patients at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Boston. He was also director of the Hyperthermia Program at Dana Farber Cancer-Institute and the recipient of multiple research awards.

In addition to electronic brachytherapy, Dr. Bornstein and the rest of the oncology team at the Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center treat patients with four-dimensional CT simulation, image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), brachytherapy “seed” implants for prostate cancer and respiratory gating – all highly advanced forms of cancer treatment offered in very few centers in New England. With this technology, patients are able to obtain all inclusive medical services for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer through Winchester Hospital.

The Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center has also received accreditation by the American College of Radiology, which is the highest level of excellence awarded in the delivery of radiation therapy. These standards certify that the Winchester Hospital Radiation Oncology Center’s technology and personnel exceed quality assurance and safety guidelines.

Dr. Bornstein is a board certified radiation oncologist. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He also has an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management and a fellowship in the American College of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Bornstein has an academic appointment at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he is an assistant clinical professor of radiation oncology at Harvard Medical School.
