Local Artist Creates Ocean Mural for Pediatric Patients at Winchester Hospital
Winchester, Mass. – A local artist recently volunteered her talent to improve the experience of children who have their blood drawn at Winchester Hospital.
Becky Heinold of Winchester spent three days creating a three-wall mural. Each wall has a 10-inch gray border signifying a porthole, as if children in the room are looking through submarine windows. Ocean scenes include coral, sea grass, sand, a whale, shark, dolphin, turtle, stingray, octopus, clownfish, jellyfish, seahorses and deep sea diver.
Becky credits her mother, Jerilyn Heinold of Winchester, with the idea to “hide” eight starfish which phlebotomists can ask children to find as an added distraction. Jerilyn also painted the coral, sand and all 160 porthole bolts.
“I like the idea of staff bringing kids into the room with their eyes closed, and telling them that now they’ve entered a submarine,” Becky said. “I hope the kids have fun with it.”
Donna Cefalo, phlebotomy coordinator at Winchester Hospital, said the entire phlebotomy staff has noticed how popular the drawing room has become with patients of all ages.
“Plenty of adults request that room,” she said. “The scenery is a welcome comfort for them as well as the kids.”
Last fall, Becky donated an oil painting to Winchester Hospital’s gala auction to benefit the Center for Cancer Care being developed at 620 Washington St. in Winchester. For more information about her artwork, visit www.portraits-by-becky.com.
