Winchester Hospital Board of Directors Supports Construction of Outpatient Surgery Center in Winchester
Winchester, Mass. – Winchester Hospital’s Board of Directors recently supported the construction of a single-story, 26,000-square foot outpatient surgery center at 620 Washington St. in Winchester. Construction will begin in the fall.
The original, 100,000-square-foot ambulatory care center (ACC) planned at the site included an outpatient surgery center, physical therapy, medical offices, imaging, pain management, patient registration, laboratory drawing station and parking garage. Due to an urgent need for surgical capacity and limited financing for construction projects, however, the board supported moving forward only with the outpatient surgery center. Surgeries expected to be performed at the site include orthopedic, hand, podiatry, ENT (otorhinolaryngology), urology and gynecology. Pre-admission testing also will be located at the site.
Winchester Hospital will continue to pursue full development of the ACC, which received town approval following a lengthy permitting process but was delayed when two appeals were filed. The design and construction of the surgery center, which is allowed under current zoning requirements, will be coordinated so that other components of the ACC may be added.
This new location will allow patients to receive convenient outpatient care while enabling Winchester Hospital to keep its main campus at 41 Highland Ave. in Winchester focused on advanced surgical procedures, emergency services and inpatient care utilizing more private rooms.
The surgery center is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011. This project and the cancer center, currently under construction and scheduled to open next summer, will be funded through loans and fundraising efforts.
“Through the years, Winchester Hospital has consistently responded to community need,” said Kevin Smith, president and chief executive officer of Winchester Hospital. “This new surgery center and cancer center will ensure access to the most advanced health care for generations to come.”
