Feel Your Best and Weigh Less in 2010 through Winchester Hospital
Winchester, Mass. – It’s almost the beginning of a new year, full of hope and possibility. If 2010 brings a resolution to work on your weight and your health, the staff of Winchester Hospital’s Health Management ResourcesÒ (HMR) Weight Management Program can help every step of the way with a program proven to work.
A study in the August 2009 issue of Journal of the American Dietetic Association analyzed dieters in HMR’s Decision-Free® and Healthy Solutions® programs. The Decision-Free plan consists of a minimum of five HMR shakes, soup, pudding or cereal daily. The Healthy Solutions plan consists of three HMR shakes, soup, pudding or cereal, along with two HMR entrees and five servings of fruits and vegetables. Both plans are nutritious, portion-controlled and filling.
Participants using the Decision-Free diet lost an average of 43.3 pounds in 19 weeks, while those on the Healthy Solutions diet lost an average of 37.5 pounds in 18 weeks. This data represents two to three times more weight loss, in less time, compared to published results of any other commercial diet program.
According to Dr. James W. Anderson, co-author of the study and medical director of the University of Kentucky HMR Program, “The weight loss was between 15.8 percent and 16.4 percent of initial body weight, both well above the gold standard the health community considers successful, and the point at which health improvements are seen.”
The HMR foods are simply a tool providing the structure needed to promote safe, rapid weight loss. The “program” is the education and coaching around sustaining lifestyle changes (fruit and vegetable intake, lean protein and physical activity) necessary for healthier weight.
Behavior change is challenging and difficult to maintain long-term without support in our fast-paced, stress-filled, calorie-packed world. Winchester Hospital’s staff of registered dietitians help participants stay focused throughout the ups and downs of weight management by providing classroom instruction and follow-up via e-mail and telephone. In addition, there is a self-directed plan for those who can’t attend the clinic, including home delivery of HMR foods, a Quick Start CD, materials and optional weigh-in visits with a dietitian.
A free HMR Weight Management Program information session will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 6:15 p.m. at Riverside Healthcare Associates, 75 Riverside Ave. in Medford Square. For more information or to register, call (781) 396-6221, ext 1.
