Winchester Hospital Offers Free Prostate Cancer Informational Session on June 22

Winchester, Mass. — According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men, after lung cancer. In the U.S., one in six men will be diagnosed in his lifetime. With increased awareness and screening, however, more men can be diagnosed early and return to active, productive lives after treatment.

Winchester Hospital urologist Joshua Stern, MD, a fellowship-trained robotic surgeon, will present “Prostate Cancer: Signs, Symptoms and Treatments” on Tuesday, June 22, noon to 1 p.m., at The Crestview, 36 Montvale Ave. in Woburn. The free lecture will discuss prostate cancer risk factors, symptoms, the importance of early diagnosis, and treatment options including non-invasive surgery using the da Vinci robotic surgical system.

“Screening for prostate cancer and the diagnosis of prostate cancer can be difficult issues for families to fully understand,” Dr. Stern said. “Prostate cancer is a very common diagnosis, and as such, a wide support network through Winchester Hospital is available. I look forward to answering any questions people may have.”

Through robotic surgery, surgeons are able to perform major pelvic surgery, including surgery for cancer, with unmatched precision and control using only a few small incisions. Patients benefit from fewer complications; far less pain, blood loss, and scarring; faster recovery; and a shorter hospital stay over traditional open procedures.
