Winchester Hospital's maternal-newborn service is distinguished by:

  •  24/7 in-hospital obstetric coverage with an in-house laborist
  • Maternal Fetal Medicine Program, which brings specialists from Boston to our hospital to care for women with high-risk pregnancies for the duration of their pregnancy
  • Level IIB Special Care Nursery (neonatal intensive care), in collaboration with Boston Children's Hospital

The warmth and support of our expert staff is coupled with some of today’s newest technology.

  • We have expertise in the latest and most effective pain management techniques for labor and delivery.
  • In our Labor and Delivery Unit, all of the new fetal monitors are equipped with improved, noninvasive blood pressure technology delivering quick and reliable readings between contractions.
  • In our Mother Baby Unit, new fetal monitors have visual and audio alerts that identify heart rates outside of the normal range.

Our Services for Expectant Mothers

A team of obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists and nurses work together to provide the best technology and personal care to achieve optimal pregnancy outcomes. Some specific procedures include:

  • Ultrasounds, including more in-depth level II ultrasounds
  • Genetic counseling
  • First trimester screening
  • Amniocentesis
  • Chorionic villus sampling

Our Maternal Newborn Services for Babies

Some of the neonatal complications cared for include premature birth, respiratory distress, infection and drug withdrawal symptoms. Some specific procedures include:

  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to support breathing
  • High flow nasal cannula oxygen
  • Needle thoracentesis
  • Chest tube placement
  • Pediatric EKG and echocardiography 
  • Parenteral nutrition
  • Upper GI series
  • Central line placement via umbilical catheter and PICC lines
  • Transfusion of blood products
  • Exchange transfusions
  • Head ultrasound
  • Pediatric EEG 
  • Ophthalmology (eye) exams
