3D Mammography

Tomosynthesis, also known as "3D mammography," is an advanced breast cancer screening option that is currently available. This imaging technology can be utilized to enhance breast abnormalities that would be difficult to see with traditional 2D mammography, allowing physicians to detect breast cancer earlier. Tomosynthesis takes an image of the breast and reconstructs the view to reflect a three dimensional view of each layer of breast tissue. Tomosynthesis is especially effective for women with dense breasts, to help define overlapping breast tissue. Roughly 40 percent of U.S. women have dense breast tissue, and most don’t know it.

Women scheduled for a 3D mammogram can expect a similar experience to a 2D screening, with comparable breast compression. With tomosynthesis, an X-ray arm on the machine makes a quick arc over the breast, taking a series of images at a number of angles.

What are the benefits?

  • Improved cancer detection
  • Reduced false positives
  • Better visualization
  • Less patient anxiety

What is the cost?

3D mammography is currently not covered by insurance. Currently there is no additional fee that will be billed on the 2D mammogram for the 3D tomosynthesis component.
