A Home Away From Home

Staff Spotlight: Kyle Monahan, Lab Chemistry Coordinator

“I think it is always important to shine some light on departments that otherwise get overlooked – something my family believes from having work experience in different departments and roles.”

Kyle Monahan’s career at Winchester Hospital started as soon as he graduated college from UMass Dartmouth, but he was familiar with the hospital long before then.

“My mom had worked as a secretary and lab associate at the Winchester Hospital Family Medical Center for the majority of my childhood and adult life. My family was always visiting her at work, whether it was bringing and having lunch or just stopping by to say hi,” Monahan remembers. “My exposure to the medical field is definitely attributed to my mom.”

For the Monahans, working at Winchester Hospital was the family business. With inspiration from his mom, Kyle started out as a medical technologist and eventually was promoted to his current position as Chemistry Coordinator in the lab. In total, he’s worked at Winchester Hospital for nearly 11 years. His sister also worked at Winchester Hospital in Labor & Delivery before leaving recently to care for her own children.

While he had immediate family working in different departments, Kyle noted that his colleagues also contributed to making Winchester feel like home.

“My coworkers are what I enjoy most about working at Winchester,” Kyle shared. “Throughout COVID, work has been crazy at times and my coworkers have become family. They make work enjoyable and I can always count on them for a good laugh.”

Kyle has been especially grateful for their support during COVID and with his mother’s recent cancer diagnosis. With their encouragement, he chose to run the 2022 Boston Marathon in her honor to support the Nurses Educational Fund at Winchester Hospital.

“I knew that chemo was going to be a struggle and I thought what better way to support my mom than to show her how many people are behind her, rooting her on. The support from my coworkers, family and friends has been overwhelming both for my mother and my fundraising,” Kyle said.

Kyle also stressed that it truly is the teamwork at Winchester that is important to its overall success.

“It takes all departments for a hospital to function to its fullest potential. While the fundraising is going to the Nurses Educational Fund, I think it is always important to shine some light on departments that otherwise get overlooked – something my family believes from having work experience in different departments and roles.”
