Winchester Hospital Recognizes ‘Extraordinary Nurse’ Euriane “Nane” Santos
Winchester Hospital has recognized Euriane “Nane” Santos, RN of Woburn, as its most recent recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses after a patient’s daughter nominated her for being so “caring and understanding” to her mother. The DAISY Award, presented in collaboration with the American Organization of Nurse Executives, is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the exceptional efforts that nurses make each day.
In the nomination, the woman wrote that her mother lost her husband of 51 years while a patient at Winchester Hospital. She said that Santos volunteered to take her mother to the wake, so she could say goodbye to her husband.
“My mother often spoke about how wonderful Nane was and I know she greatly appreciated everything Nane did for her,” the woman wrote. “Whenever they were together, it was obvious that my mom thoroughly enjoyed Nane’s company. Nane had such a positive impact on my mother’s life as well as our family’s life. She is an extremely compassionate and caring person and she was a great comfort to us all.”
Winchester Hospital has joined hundreds of medical facilities across the country in honoring extraordinary nurses with a DAISY Award each month. Based in Glen Ellen, Calif., the nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) in 1999. The DAISY Award, which stands for “Diseases Attacking the Immune System,” was established by Barnes’ wife and parents as a gesture of thanks to nurses nationwide for the profound difference they make in the lives of patients and their families.
In recognition of her selection, Santos received a DAISY Award pin, a hand-carved sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch” and a certificate that reads, “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”
