Winchester Doctor Honored for Compassion

Winchester Hospital Doctor Named Compassionate Caregiver of the Year

John Copanos, MD was named the first recipient of the Dr. Kenneth Tucker Compassionate Caregiver of the Year award. The award was presented at the hospital’s 59th annual Service Awards dinner on Thursday, May 10.

The award is named after Dr. Kenneth Tucker who passed away in January. He was a beloved member of the medical staff since 1978, specializing in internal medicine and cardiology, and a founding co-chair of the Schwartz Center Rounds at Winchester Hospital. Dr. Tucker was well known for the exemplary compassionate care he gave to each and every one of his patients.

According to Marlene Williamson, director of inpatient nursing at Winchester Hospital, Dr. Copanos exhibits all the characteristics of a compassionate caregiver. He expresses sensitivity and empathy, respects and cares for the patient as an individual and the patient’s family, shows an ability to understand the patient’s emotional needs and was present with the patient, especially in times of crisis, while helping the patient and family to understand their situation and enhance the quality of life.

“In today’s healthcare environment, stresses sometimes threaten our ability to provide compassionate care. Schwartz rounds give us the opportunity to talk about the heart of healthcare and the Compassionate Caregiver Award gives us the opportunity to celebrate those who exemplify compassion and caring,” Williamson said. “Dr. Copanos is the perfect recipient of this award.”

Dr. Copanos also displays outstanding listening, communication and interpersonal skills; has an ability to impart strength and hope and support healing. He shows sensitivity to cultural and spiritual differences and an ability to support the patient and family to make choices, according to Williamson.
