Lifestyle Changes to Manage Headache

Making changes to lifestyle habits can help some people ease these types of headaches:

  • Tension headache
  • Migraine headache
  • Cluster headache
  • Sinus headache

Tension Headache

Exercise

Physical activity can help control stress. Start slowly and work up to 30 minutes on most days of the week.

Good Posture

Poor posture leads to tension headaches. Sit upright. Do not cradle a phone on your shoulder. Hold it in your hand or use a headset. Physical and occupational therapy can help.

Ease Stress

Work with a therapist to learn stress triggers and ways to manage them, such as relaxation methods. Massage may also help.

Migraine Headache

Ease Stress

Work with a therapist to learn stress triggers and ways to manage them, such as relaxation methods.

Exercise

Physical activity can help ease stress and improve overall mental health. Start slowly and work up to 30 minutes on most days of the week. People whose migraines are triggered by activity should talk to their doctors before starting a workout program.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleeping and waking at the same times each day may help prevent headaches.

Cluster Headache

Ease Stress

Work with a therapist to learn stress triggers and ways to manage them, such as relaxation methods.

Sinus Headache

Keep Nasal Passages Moist

This can be done by:

  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Breathing in warm, moist air
  • Using salt water nasal spray or a neti-pot
Practice Proper Handwashing

Hand washing helps prevent colds and other infections passed from the hand to the nose, mouth, or eyes. Colds raise the amount of mucus in and swelling of the nasal passages, which can lead to sinusitis.
