About Ultrasounds
Ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to obtain images from inside the human body. Warm gel is applied to your skin and a small wand, called a transducer, is moved over the skin and sends sound waves into the body.
These sound waves are then reflected off internal organs and sent back to the transducer in the form of an echo. These echoes form a picture (image) on the screen and the radiologist or vascular surgeon is then able to interpret these pictures.
Most ultrasounds last between 15 and 60 minutes, but this will depend on which type of examination your doctor requested. Please call us at 781-756-2342 if you have any questions about your exam.
How to Schedule Your Exam
Please call Winchester Hospital’s centralized scheduling office at 781-756-2211. All exams require either an electronic or written order which can be faxed to 781-756-8709, provided by your physician, prior to scheduling the appointment. Your exam may require a pre-authorization from your insurance carrier. Please check with your insurance company.
Paying for Your Exam
Although Winchester Hospital accepts most major commercial insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid and Worker’s Compensation, it is important to check with your insurance carrier prior to your exam to determine coverage. If you do not have health insurance, please call the Estimates phone line at 781-744-8779. Please contact Customer Service at 781-744-8772 to arrange a payment prior to your exam.
Getting Your Results
Your exam will be interpreted by a Radiologist using our state-of-the-art picture archiving and communication system (PACS). The results are sent to your doctor, who in turn will review the results with you to determine best course of treatment. To get a copy of your images, you will need to prearrange their release.
A notice of 24 hours is preferred for most efficient customer service. Urgent requests will be honored but there may be a 30 to 60 minute wait.
About Our Vascular Laboratory
Early detection of life-threatening vascular conditions, such as stroke and blood clots, is possible through the use of non-invasive testing techniques. If your physician suspects you may have a problem with your circulatory system, you will be referred to the Vascular Lab for testing.
Our Vascular Lab offers a full range of vascular tests for the arteries and veins of the arms, legs and neck. Our team of highly skilled technologists performs between 3,000 and 4,000 exams per year.
These non-invasive exams are painless and require no needles, dyes or x-rays. They are without risk or side effects and take an hour or less, depending on the exam ordered. There is no preparation for these exams and patients can return to normal activities immediately following the testing session.
The Vascular Lab utilizes state-of-the-art imaging equipment to assess blood flow in the arteries and veins. Our Vascular Lab has been accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL) since 1997, recognizing Winchester Hospital’s commitment and consistency in the delivery of quality testing for vascular disease.
The lab is conveniently located within the Radiology Department at the hospital’s main campus at 41 Highland Avenue in Winchester.
Winchester Hospital is recognized as one of the area’s most prominent obstetric hospitals, offering a 24-hour laborist program and a Special Care Nursery for newborns in need of specialized medical care.
Winchester Hospital offers a variety of rehabilitation services – including cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation as well as physical, occupational and speech therapy – to help you get back to your normal routine.
The skilled and caring staff at Winchester Hospital's Pain Management Center helps hundreds of patients each year reduce and cope with chronic pain so that they can lead more active and productive lives.
