Ultrasound at Winchester Hospital

Ultrasound, or sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to get images of the inside of your body. At Winchester Hospital, our doctors use ultrasound tools to look at the many internal structures in your body.

Ultrasound doesn’t use radiation, and it is non-invasive. Research shows that ultrasounds are a harmless way to see the inside of the body, even for someone who is pregnant.

Preparing for Your Ultrasound

Though ultrasounds require minimal preparation, there are a few things to keep in mind when receiving an ultrasound.

Before Your Ultrasound

Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You may need to change into a hospital gown.

During Your Ultrasound

A sonographer, or ultrasound specialist, applies a warm gel to your skin. They then use a small wand, called a transducer, and move it over your skin. The transducer sends soundwaves that produce images. The gel helps improve the quality of images by maximizing contact between the skin and transducer.

Most ultrasounds last between 15 and 60 minutes. The exact timing depends on which type of exam your doctor requested.

After Your Ultrasound

A specialist reviews your ultrasound images and talks with your doctor. Your doctor then discusses your results with you and answers any questions you have.

If you have questions about your exam, call us at 781-756-2342.
